What Happens When Kids Can’t Read by Third Grade?
We're So Glad You're Here
By third grade, children are expected to shift from learning to read… to reading to learn. But what happens when they haven’t mastered that critical skill in time?
At Core Reading Center, we see this struggle every day—and we know the stakes are high. When students fall behind in reading early on, it can affect their entire academic path and, eventually, their future opportunities.

Why Third Grace Matters So Much
Third grade is often referred to as a critical turning point in education. Before third grade, most instruction focuses on basic reading skills—like decoding words, building vocabulary, and developing fluency. But after third grade, students are expected to use reading as a tool to learn new content across subjects like science, history, and math.
If a child is still struggling to read fluently by the end of third grade, they begin to fall further behind—because nearly everything they’re asked to learn depends on reading comprehension.
Evidence-based reading practices
Individualized support from certified educators
A commitment to equity and accessibility
Whether it’s one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, or summer reading camps, our goal is the same: to close the reading gap and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
The Long-Term Impact of Falling Behind
Research shows that children who don’t read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. And the risks are even higher for students living in poverty, who may also lack access to books, technology, or extra academic support.
Poor reading skills can lead to:
- Lower test scores across all subjects
- Reduced confidence and motivation
- Behavioral challenges or disengagement
- Limited access to college and career pathways
This isn’t just an academic problem—it’s a social justice issue. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and that starts with reading.

Break cycles of disadvantage
We believe that reading is a human right—and that no child should be denied that right because of circumstances beyond their control.
What Core Reading Center Is Doing About It
At Core Reading Center, we provide free, personalized reading instruction to students in grades K–12, with a focus on those who are not meeting grade-level expectations.
Our certified educators work one-on-one and in small groups with struggling readers, using proven strategies to build:
- Phonics and decoding skills
- Reading fluency
- Vocabulary
- Reading comprehension
- Confidence and joy in learning
We focus on early intervention—but we also work with older students who need a second chance at building these foundational skills.
