Core Reading Center was founded by Dr. Melinda Bentley, an educator, advocate, and lifelong learner whose deep passion for literacy and educational equity led to the creation of a space where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bentley witnessed firsthand the challenges that students face when they struggle with reading. She understood what research confirms: reading is the foundation for all learning. When children fall behind in reading, they don’t just struggle in language arts—they begin to fall behind in every subject, from science to history to math. And without early intervention, these gaps grow wider over time.
But one truth remained clear: Every child is capable of learning to read—with the right support.
Driven by a commitment to closing the opportunity gap, Dr. Bentley set out to create a program that would meet students where they are—academically, emotionally, and personally. She also recognized a major barrier: cost. Many families cannot afford private tutoring or literacy support, even though their children desperately need it. And far too often, those who need help the most are left without access.
That’s why Core Reading Center exists:
To provide free, high-quality, evidence-based reading instruction to students in grades K–12—especially those who are reading below grade level and have limited access to educational resources.
Our programs are designed to do more than improve test scores. We aim to build confidence, unlock potential, and help every student discover the joy of reading. Whether it’s a first grader learning to sound out words or a middle school student working to catch up, we tailor instruction to meet each learner’s unique needs.
At Core Reading Center, we believe that literacy is not a privilege—it’s a right.
And when we empower students with the tools to read, we open doors that lead to lifelong learning, academic success, and brighter futures.
We’re not just teaching reading.
We’re changing lives—one reader at a time.

Mrs. Bentley worked with our 9-year-old daughter, who has learning disabilities after a hemispherectomy. At the time, she could barely read. Thanks to Mrs. Bentley’s support, her reading and love of learning grew tremendously. That foundation continues to shape her success today. We’re deeply grateful for the lasting impact Mrs. Bentley made.
Our daughter had a bone marrow transplant at five and received home instruction for kindergarten. Mrs. Bentley was a Godsend—engaging, kind, and an exceptional teacher. She made learning enjoyable during a tough time and ignited a love for reading. Her impact remains a special part of our family today.
When we began, our daughter couldn’t read—but progress started immediately. Even through COVID and virtual sessions, she gained confidence and advanced several reading levels. Melinda’s consistency, kindness, and effective teaching made a lasting impact. As my daughter said, “She was kind to all the kids.”
Reading Camp has been a true blessing for my children. Reading was difficult for my son, and my daughter struggled with fluency. Both gained valuable skills—and, more importantly, rediscovered their love of reading. Thank you for making reading more than just preparing for a test. You've helped restore joy and confidence, and I am truly grateful.
My son struggled with reading from an early age, but everything changed when he was placed in Mrs. Bentley’s class. She took the time to understand his individual needs, taught him effective reading strategies, and built his confidence. Her loving, supportive approach helped him enjoy reading, and her impact continues to guide his success even today.
