The Science Of Reading
What Every Parent Should Know
We're So Glad You're Here
If your child struggles with reading, you’re not alone—and it’s not your fault.
At Core Reading Center, we believe in giving families the tools and knowledge they need to support their children’s learning. One of the most important things to understand is this: how children actually learn to read. That’s where the Science of Reading comes in.
But what does that mean, exactly? Let’s break it down together.

What Is the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading is not a trend or teaching style. It’s a body of research—decades of it—from fields like education, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and linguistics. This research explains how the brain learns to read, and it tells us what really works when it comes to teaching reading skills.
The bottom line?
Reading is not a natural process.
Unlike speaking, which most children learn just by being around language, reading must be taught—step by step.
Evidence-based reading practices
Individualized support from certified educators
A commitment to equity and accessibility
Whether it’s one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, or summer reading camps, our goal is the same: to close the reading gap and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
How the Brain Learns to Read
To become fluent readers, children must connect two key areas in their brain:
- The part that recognizes spoken words and language (oral language skills)
- The part that decodes symbols and letters (phonics/print awareness)
That’s why skilled reading instruction must teach both the mechanics of reading and the meaning behind it.
The Five Pillars Of Reading
The Science of Reading highlights five essential components that children must master to become confident readers:
- Phonemic Awareness – the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words
- Phonics – connecting sounds to written letters (sounding out words)
- Fluency – reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression
- Vocabulary – knowing the meaning of words
- Comprehension – understanding what’s been read
All five of these skills build on each other. If one is weak, it can hold a child back—even if they’re strong in other areas.
What Doesn't Work?
Unfortunately, many schools still rely heavily on strategies that don’t align with this research. Methods like “three-cueing” (guessing based on pictures or the first letter) or encouraging kids to memorize whole words may work for some, but they leave many students behind—especially those with dyslexia or learning differences.
The good news? When we follow the science, we can reach almost every learner.
What We Do At Core Reading Center
Our programs are fully rooted in the Science of Reading. Here’s what that means for your child:
- We assess each student to identify specific skill gaps
- We use evidence-based methods like systematic phonics instruction
- We teach with structured, explicit, and multisensory techniques
We don’t rely on guesswork—we build real, lasting skills.
Whether it’s one-on-one tutoring, small group lessons, or summer camps, every program we offer is designed to help your child learn the right way, at the right pace, with the right support.
How Can You Help At Home
You don’t need to be a teacher to support your child. Here are a few simple ways to use this knowledge at home:
- Practice rhyming, blending, and segmenting sounds
- Read aloud every day—even for 10 minutes
- Talk about stories and ask open-ended questions
- Encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words instead of guessing
- Celebrate effort, not just accuracy!
Final Thoughts
If your child is struggling with reading, it’s not a reflection of their intelligence—or your parenting. They may simply need instruction that’s based on how the brain learns best.
And that’s what we’re here for.
At Core Reading Center, we believe that every child can learn to read with the right tools, time, and support. The Science of Reading gives us the map. We’re here to walk the path with you.
